“Arts in the United States” by Mu Jiashan at PKU

旅美画家穆家善北大演讲：艺术在美国

Peking University, Beijing, Nov. 5th, 2007: On the evening of November 5th, famous painter Mu Jiashan, came from American, delivered a speech named “Arts in the United States” at the Leo Ko Yuan Building of Peking University.

Mr. Mu appeared in front of PKU students with a casual style including a jacket and a backpack. He expressed his pleasure to communicate and interchange with everyone. He said: “In China, art is a very abundant concept. It is a combination of Yi and Shu. In the United States, if you ask this question, then someone will tell you that art just is art and it can not be split.”

Mu Jiashan illuminated the difference between Chinese and Western art with a concise manner: “Chinese painting is a kind of vacant beauty. It uses romantic eyes to look at the world and with a realistic approach to perform the image. Modern Western art often chooses the true perspective to observe life but demonstrated it through an abstract.”

Then he used a group of photographs from the National Museum of Art to introduce the modern art of America to students. His humorous, witty and passionate lecture moved everyone at present and drew lots of applause.After the lecture, student asked some questions and Mr. Mu answered them earnest, which brought another applause.

This is the fourth time for Mr. Mu, who is given the invitation by the Chinese Ministry of Education "Chunhui Project Fund", to deliver the lecture tour at Tsinghua University, Nanjing University, Xiamen University and so on. He said that if given the opportunity he will come back to interchange with friends of Peking University next March.

11月5日晚上7点，在北京大学廖凯源楼，远道而来的旅美画家穆家善为北大学子做“艺术在美国”的精彩演讲。

一件夹克，一个背包，穆先生以一身休闲出现在大家面前，“非常高兴大家今晚能来这儿听我瞎扯，也很期望与你们交流。”轻松简短的开场白立即拉近了他与大家的距离。

“首先我请问在座的各位什么是艺术？”穆先生刚一进入就抛给大家一个问题，“在中国，艺术是一个很丰富的概念，它是艺与术的结合。在美国，如果你问这个问题，那么有人会告诉你：Art just is art.它不能拆分，无以言表。”

“中国画是一种空灵的美，是用浪漫的眼去看世界，而用一种写实的手法来表现意象。西方现代艺术往往以真实的视角观察生活，却以抽象的形式将其表现出来。”穆家善先生用一种简练的方式说明中西艺术的差别。接着他用一组来自美国国家艺术馆的照片，带领大家一同了解美国的现代艺术，在介绍每幅作品时，穆先生都用一种不同的视角加以分析，讲到精彩处不禁动情，他的幽默、风趣与激情感染了在场的每一位观众，博得了阵阵掌声。

演讲结束后，一个同学提出“艺术是为了表现真善美，而现代艺术往往无法给人以美的享受。”穆先生很认真的说：“对于艺术每个人都有自己不同的理解，谁也不能强求，但是作为一名艺术家必须要有一种社会责任感与使命感，才谈得上创作。”他的话再一次赢得大家的掌声。

穆先生此次是第四次受中国教育部“春晖计划基金”邀请，在清华大学、南京大学、厦门大学等高校巡回讲学。他表示明年3月如果有机会还会再来北大与朋友们一同切磋。

 

穆家善先生简介：

穆家善，1961年生于江苏。1988年毕业于南京艺术学院，1991年攻读该院硕士研究生。现任美国亚太艺术研究院院长、蒙哥马利学院中国画兼职教授、上海戏剧学院客座教授、上海大学艺术研究院兼职教授、上海大学数码艺术学院客座教授、厦门大学艺术学院客座教授、英国剑桥国际名人传记中心和美国传记研究院终身艺术顾问、美国美术考级评审委员会主席、《中国艺术收藏年鉴》、《中国书画三十年史志》、《水墨画名家经典》国际编委。80年代起在中国美术馆、香港中国画廊、美国马里兰美术学院等举办25次个人画展，百余次国际组展。被誉为“中国文化大使”、“海外学院派代表画家”、“海外中国画领军人物”等。2007年被中国驻美大使馆推荐为中国教育部长江学者候选人。
